Quảng Đức at the Intersection
At an intersection in Saigon, the Buddhist monk Thích Quảng Đức sat on the ground and set himself on fire. It was 11 June 1963. Monks and onlookers stood around him while the American correspondent Malcolm Browne photographed the scene. Quảng Đức died protesting the South Vietnamese authorities’ persecution of Buddhists.

A month earlier, on 8 May, civilians had been killed during a demonstration in Huế. President Ngô Đình Diệm was Catholic; Catholics enjoyed privileges under his U.S.-backed government. Buddhist monks and nuns took to the streets demanding religious freedom and political change. The authorities suppressed the protests, and the confrontation grew.
A monk alerted Browne the night before. The AP correspondent joined the procession from the pagoda. He later told Patrick Witty that he had shot about ten rolls with a Petri camera. A passenger carried the film from Saigon to Manila, where the photographs were transmitted by radiophoto.

On 12 June, The Boston Globe and the Los Angeles Times printed the photograph on inside pages. The New York Times initially declined to publish it; two weeks later, it appeared in a full-page advertisement paid for by a group of clergymen. LIFE devoted a spread to Browne’s photographs in its 21 June issue.
The Buddhist crisis continued after Quảng Đức’s death. In August, forces directed by the president’s brother, Ngô Đình Nhu, raided Buddhist pagodas. Washington debated whether to continue supporting Diệm and how to respond to a possible coup. South Vietnamese military officers overthrew him on 1 November; Diệm and Nhu were killed on 2 November. That day, Washington told the American ambassador that their deaths had caused shock and that the new government needed to explain the circumstances.
In December 1963, Browne travelled to Amsterdam to receive the World Press Photo of the Year award. The following year, he shared the Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting with David Halberstam of The New York Times. The prize recognised their reporting on the Vietnam War and the overthrow of Diệm’s government.
